If you ask me exactly how it happened, I couldn't tell you, but somewhere during our annual reunion meeting, I was entrusted with the task of researching then ordering a variety of custom caps and embroidered hats for the next international family reunion. Now some of you may think that this would be an honor. Some of you may be thinking what's the big deal, but let me tell you the scope of the ordeal that I had just thrown in my lap?
Now lucky for me I am somewhat Internet savvy and that I had a fair chunk of time before the reunion. So I set out on my favorite search engine and started researching the terms ?custom caps' and ?embroidered hats'. Thankfully there is no shortage of companies that offer custom caps and embroidered hats.
But the question is how do I pick which company, when I am not entirely sure even what I want or need?
So first I sat down and tried to make a list of the different types of embroidered hats and custom caps that people might buy at a family reunion. Hats embroidered with the family crest, the family name and year, the first initial and may be some fun embroidered hats that had sayings like "I survived my family reunion".
I also looked in to custom caps for the younger generation. To get our family youth interested, I looked at custom caps like beanies, bucket caps, skull caps, visors, golf caps, knit caps, straw hats and winter hats. These too I could have embroidered, probably with an initial and a year.
So now that I had a bit of an idea what I wanted, I looked to see what companies were offering.
Baseball caps were the first type of embroidered hat I looked at, as it would be the most suitable to put all the different embroidery logos on and most likely to be purchased by the majority of attendees. Who knew that there were so many different choices involved in just picking the hat to be embroidered? Ball caps come in a variety of backings and fabrics. Common backings include fitted, elastic, Velcro straps, adjustable snaps, metal D-ring slide closure and metal buckle closure. Ball caps commonly come in cotton, twill, canvas, wool blended, mesh or a combination of these fabrics.
So which do I choose? I know what fabric and backing I would prefer on my embroidered hat but that is not necessarily what everyone would prefer.
So do I get a variety of each type of embroidered hat or just one type? In the end I decided to go the middle of the road. I would get two styles of embroidered hat for each design and mix up the combinations. That way there was bound to be an embroidered hat that everyone could live with.
Next I looked at the custom caps. By this time my head was spinning from all the different types of custom caps. Thankfully, I had chosen a single design for my custom caps.
This way I only had to order a bunch of each type of custom cap with the one design.
Of course I still hadn't tackled the issue of color for the embroidered hats and custom caps. I had procrastinated on this subject as long as possible, but it had come time to make a choice. I could go with one color which would be easiest, but displease a lot of people or I could pick a dozen or so colors, one for each design and still displease a ton of people or order one of every color and displease the committee. Not a fun choice, but once again I tried for the happy medium.
I ordered each embroidered hat and custom cap in three colors, but not the same three colors. Once again, I could only hope that this would please the majority of people.
While I had an image of our crest, I still had to decide on the embroidery lettering style for the custom caps and embroidered hats. In this instance, I decided that all custom caps and embroidered hats should have the same style of lettering. I decide to choose the style closest to the font used for banners at the reunion. Thank goodness there was one relatively easy choice.
Now to look at which embroidery company could provide for all the choices I had made for the embroidered hats and custom caps and what it was going to cost per each item (which would help me decide how many to order), the shipping cost and how long it would take to arrive.
While scrolling through the results from the search engines, I found a company that did custom caps and embroidered hats that looked appropriate.
I emailed them who I was, approximately what I wanted, my budget and when I needed it. From here it was smooth sailing (thankfully) for me. I had found an awesome company who worked with me to provide exactly what I needed at a very reasonable cost. They had no minimum order or setup requirements. Once they quoted what it would be for each embroidered hat and custom cap as well as what volume discounts could be, I was able to set my quantity for each.
The delivery time was two weeks from the date the logos were approved, but I did have the option of a rush delivery for an extra cost.
Two weeks later I had boxes of custom caps and embroidered hats. It was just like Christmas!!!
So how did it turn out at the reunion? Pretty well everything considered for my first time. Of course some people wanted this design with that fabric and this other color and so on, but on the whole, people were pretty happy. We were near to selling out all our custom caps and embroidered hats. Even the younger generation thought that they were pretty cool.
The beanies went like wild fire!
Infact, the committee was so pleased with the job I did, that they wanted me to look into other embroidered items for next year. Just my luck?
