Alexandria, VA (ContentDesk) May 12, 2006 -- Christi Smethurst, a stay-at-home Mom, needed hats for her young son and daughter.
After fruitless attempts searching local childrens boutiques and online retailers, Christi took matters into her own hands and turned to her sewing machine.I was frustrated with the lack of cute hats on the market.
There were plenty of ways to keep their heads warm, but nothing that said fun; functional; fashionable.
I wanted to find a winter hat with a little bit of style and a little bit of whimsy. Out of this frustration, Lexy Lu Designs was born, a company specializing in handmade fleece hats with colorful grosgrain ribbon tops.
The hats come in many different styles, pairing colors such as:
hot pink and lime green, pink and brown, blue and brown and the traditional toiles.
There is something for everyone, including boys.
My son saw the hot pink hat I made for my daughter and wanted one for himself.
I found a polka dot ribbon that is all boy and mixed it with browns and blues and the pairing is surprisingly masculine. When my children are wearing the hats, I am overwhelmed by the public response.
We can not walk down a street without getting numerous comments on how adorable the hats are.
The hats appeal to a diverse group of people and personalites:
Moms, Dads, Grandparents, everyone.
The hats brought smiles to so many faces; I decided to go into business.Christi left a consulting career with Bearing Point in 2002 to raise her children.
While she loved consulting, it left little room for her imagination.
She has now successfully combined her business "know-how" with her creative spirit.
The results speak for themselves. The hats are available in sizes 0 to 6 years and the suggested retail price is $18 to $22.
Initial buyers can see store listings on www.lexylu.com.In the short time since the January 2006 launch, boutiques nationwide have already made contact with Lexy Lu for its hats, and the list is growing.
This little company is unlikely to remain small for long....
The Great Adventure
(Liz, dressed for hiking, enters with a walking stick in hand and
wearing a backpack.) Hi! My name is Elizabeth Andra Shaw and I'm on a great adventure ? a journey called Life, a journey to answer the question, "Who am I?" The first 44 years of my life, I lived in a place called Hatville. It was an exciting place. Everyone was very busy because they were wearing many different hats. In Hatville, hats are very popular. People collect hats, and some hats are so rare that they confer great status on their owners.
There is competition and envy surrounding high status hats. I picked up a few hats myself while I lived in Hatville, including the Daughter Hat, the Sister Hat, the Physical Therapist Hat, the Medical Editor Hat, and the Wife Hat. In fact (Liz shrugs off her backpack and extracts a hat) here is my favorite, the Phoenix Mercury Fan Hat! (Liz excitedly models the hat for the audience.) (Liz turns suddenly serious and leans on her walking stick with both hands.) There...
